Are you willing to be the “First Friend”?

Dear INSERT NAME OF PROSPECTIVE FIRST FRIEND,

We have a new student who will be joining us in your class this year!  The student’s name is INSERT NAME OF NEW STUDENT and she moved from INSERT PLACE.
INSERT NEW STUDENT NAME does not know the rest of your class at INSERT NAME OF SCHOOL.  

Can you think about how it feels to go to a new place where you don’t know anyone?  It can be a bit exciting, but it can also be a bit scary!  

I have a very important job to ask of you.  I think that you are a person who can make this new person feel welcome at our school.  You have such a cheerful attitude and are so patient.  Would you be willing to call this new student and introduce yourself to see if she has any questions about school?  Maybe you could even ask your parents if they might like to meet the new student’s family before school starts.  It would be great if you could either invite the new students to your house or invite them out for an ice cream cone.  (YOU MIGHT CONSIDER OFFERING A $10 BILL TO PAY FOR AN ICE CREAM VISIT.)  

Please let me know if you are able and willing to do this by INSERT DATE.  Be sure to talk to your parents before you answer back to me!  I know that you would do a great job making INSERT NAME OF NEW STUDENT feel welcome – but I also understand if you are not going to be available to do this before school starts.
